Head Brewer to teach Brewing and Sensory class

No better time than the summer to stay inside sipping cold beer and learning how to make beer. That’s what will be happening at Hundred Mile Brewing Company in Tempe this summer at their Brewing and Sensory Class. Head Brewer Paul Alva will teach the class three times starting this Sunday, June 25th and Sunday, July 16th and August 27th. The class will be a fun and interactive way to learn the step by step process of brewing beer. And yes, you will be sampling beer during the class.

Alva learned to make beer at the World Beer Academy studying at the Seibel Institute and Doemens Academy in Germany.

During the class the Alva will teach about the textures, tastes and aromas of different varieties of hops and malts. Throughout this sensory experience different styles of beers will be tasted to identify the unique characteristics of each beer. He will share tips and information to guide beer lovers, home brewers and new beer drinkers looking to make their own beer, increase their beer knowledge and curiosity. The Head Brewer will also be sampling his own hand-crafted beers.

Each session is from 1 – 3 p.m. and $35 per session and includes six beer samples and light appetizers. To register for the class visit their website.

A visit to GenuWine Arizona, a self serve wine bar.

With all of the development in downtown Phoenix in recent years it’s hard to recognize it let alone keep track of the new business’s that have opened up. One of those business’s is GenuWine Arizona, a wine and beer bar on Roosevelt Row.  I recently found myself at GenuWine as owners Emily Rieve and Lindsey Schoenemann were finalizing plans to celebrate their first anniversary.

Emily and Lindsey are two mid-westerners who found themselves teaching together in Gilbert. They enjoyed working together on school lessons and wanted to share their passion to collaborate on something unique. The wine enthusiasts decided on a self-serve wine bar and GenuWine Arizona was born.

What’s going on at GenuWine Arizona

Focusing on mostly Arizona wines, beers and foods guests can make their way up to the wine wall for a taste, 1/2 glass or full glass of over 24 wines. I opted for 4 tastes of Arizona wines on my visit. Local craft beers are on tap and by the bottle if you’re in the mood for the suds.

The laid back atmosphere offers board games to play, couches and chairs to talk with friends and people watch along Roosevelt. A few seats at the bar allow for you to enjoy your drink while chatting with Emily and Lindsey when their not with their guests. If hungry you can build your own cheese board.

Weekly events include beer and tastings, unique classes(cheese making), live music and a comedy night. On First Friday’s you can usually count on a beer or wine tasting and food truck outside. Happy hour is Mon.-Fri. from 3-6 p.m. with $2 off full glasses of wine, draft beer and small plates.

8th annual AmeriCAN Canned Craft Beer Festival celebrates canned beer revolution

As craft beer brewers continue the canning of their beers to protect from sunlight and the convenience where glass bottles shouldn’t go (by the pool, at the lake), the canned beer revolution rolls on with the 8th Annual AmeriCAN Canned Craft Beer Festival on Saturday April 28th.

The 4 hour event heads back to Margret T. Hance Park in downtown Phoenix and will showcase over 250 canned beers from over 100 local and national breweries from over 40 states. This years festival will include a new Arizona Trail Zone featuring brewers that don’t normally can their beer but have specially for the festival.
