Downtown Mesa BBQ Classic

Pit masters from around the country will be bringing their talents to compete in the Downtown Mesa BBQ Classic on Friday and Saturday, November 3rd & 4th. They’ll be competing to win $10,000 in purse money in the One Meat Challenge and Four Meat Master’s Series Challenge which are both sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society.

“We’re thrilled to bring pitmasters from around the country to Downtown Mesa,” said Nancy Hormann, president of the Downtown Mesa Association. “This event is free for spectators, and we encourage the community to come out and enjoy great barbecue while the teams battle it out for the grand prize.”

Friday and Saturday at the Downtown Mesa BBQ Classic

Over 5,000 spectators are expected and can vote for the “People’s Choice” winners on Saturday by purchasing tickets to be redeemed by vendors and food trucks. Tickets are $20 and you get 10-2oz samples or 1 rib bone. On Friday the teams will compete in the One Meat pork ribs competition with Four Meats Challenge on Saturday.  Saturday’s competition will be judged by certified KCBS judges, the Mesa mayor & city council and community leaders. The winners will be announced on Saturday afternoon after the judging and voting concludes.

As part of the Downtown Mesa BBQ Classic will be the Craft Q exhibition open to the public. Local art exhibits, cooking demonstrations and live music will showcase the state’s diverse artist communities. “We hope to see the community fill the streets of Downtown Mesa on Saturday,” said Hormann. “Everyone can get in on the fun by tasting various food trucks and voting for the best, enjoying live music and visiting the CRAFT Q.”

A teaser event is planned in September with backyard pitmasters from city departments and business’ competing in the Downtown Mesa BBQ Wars. The mayor, first responders and businesses will judge each team’s backyard BBQ. Friday’s Classic events are from 5-9 p.m. and 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday at 100 N. Center St. Mesa 85201.
